Peacocks has recently been awarded North East, Yorkshire and Humber regional winner for Health and Safety by The manufacturers organisation, EEF

Andy Walton, Group HSEQ Manager at Peacocks said: “We are delighted to have won this award. It is a testament to our hard working and dedicated staff across the business, who have embraced the changes necessary to continuously improve our health and safety culture.”

Health and Safety as an integral part of the business

Over the past 18 months, Peacocks has taken a new proactive approach to Health and Safety within the business, with a high-level strategy to change culture, perceptions and the physical environment.

Top level goals for improvement were identified throughout the business and these were supported with a robust educational program to;

- Develop a positive safety culture

- Ensure that safety is a priority throughout all levels of the business

- Take a risk-based approach to identify priorities

- Create a 'no blame' culture

- Create a safer working environment for all employees

- Put mental health and wellbeing on the agenda

Internal successes have included a 60% reduction in injuries year on year, 100% record of safety tours against target and 136% over target in reporting of safety observations. This resulted in Peacocks deciding to enter the awards and ultimately becoming the successful winner.

EEF give high praise

Feedback from the EEF has been very positive, they said;

“Peacocks was up against stiff competition from a range of innovative businesses - small and large - from across the region. It was selected by a panel of judges drawn from business leaders, industry experts and academics after impressing them with the ability to achieve, maintain and improve upon various industry accreditation. Judges were particularly impressed with both the level of worker involvement and senior leadership, showing the clear commitment the organisation has to the safety of it’s workers”

Next steps

In addition to having received the award and the praise received from industry experts, Peacocks now has the opportunity to go forward to be considered for a national award, the results of which will be announced in the New Year.
